Multi-level marketing, also known as MLM, is a marketing tactic usually found in network marketing, direct selling, and referral marketing.

In MLM marketing, the sales force is paid for sales personally generated, as well as the sales of others recruit by the sales force. This type of marketing results in the creation of a “downline” of distributors and a ladder of multiple levels of compensation. MLM India has gone under fire by critics labeling it as a pyramid scheme. Subsequently, MLM companies are frequently subjects of lawsuits.

Critics target MLM India marketing on its similarity to illegal pyramid schemes, high initial start-up expenditures, product price-fixing, and precedence of recruiting lower-tiered salespeople over real-world sales. This presses, and sometimes forces salespeople to purchase and utilize the company's products. MLM India marketing runs the risk of potential exploitation of personal relationships for additional sales and recruiting targets as well as complex and sometimes exaggerated compensation schemes to lure in new members. Some groups are reported to use cult-like techniques to increase their members' enthusiasm and loyalty. However, not all MLM marketing companies are managed using the same techniques, with MLM marketing groups persistently denying that their techniques are anything but legitimate business practices.

MLM marketing businesses operate internationally in more than 100 countries, including the 50 states of the United States. New businesses occasionally use terms such as "affiliate marketing" or "home-based business franchising". Many illegitimate pyramid schemes tarnish the name of MLM India marketing by attempting to present themselves as legitimate MLM marketing businesses. The FTC warns in its 2009 online article “Facts for Consumers; The Bottom Line about Multilevel Marketing Plans and Pyramid Schemes” that "Not all multilevel marketing plans are legitimate. Some are pyramid schemes. It's best not to get involved in plans where the money you make is based primarily on the number of distributors you recruit and your sales to them, rather than on your sales to people outside the plan who intend to use the products."
